Conventional dryer sheets are often made from nonwoven polyester, also known as a plastic, coated in synthetic fragrances and fabric softeners. Unfortunately studies have linked chemicals used in dryer sheets and fabric softeners to asthma, endocrine system disruption, lung issues and even cancer.
According to various studies, these are the most toxic ingredients in fabric softeners and dryer sheets:
- Benzyl acetate – linked to pancreatic cancer
- Benzyl alcohol – linked to upper respiratory tract irritation
- Ethanol – linked to central nervous system disorders
- Glutaraldehyde – linked to respiratory issues and skin irritations
- Hexylene Glycol – causes eye, skin, and respiratory irritation
- Hydrochloric Acid – can cause lung damage and severe burns and skin damage
- Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (Di-C14-18) -linked to severe eye damage or skin irritation.
- Limonene – a known carcinogen
- Chloroform – a neurotoxin and carcinogen
- Fragrances and dyes – can cause various health issues
Fortunately, you can use dryer sheet alternatives to keep your laundry soft, static-free and smelling fresh.
You might have heard this simple tip before: Adding a dry towel to wet clothes in the dryer! Why? Because it can help to absorb moisture, speed up the drying time and make your clothes soft!
Additionally, adding a dry towel can also fluff up clothes!
NATURAL WAYS TO SCENT LAUNDRY:
- Add a lavender sachet into your dryer. (find it here)
- Put a few drops of your favorite essential oil (I use lavender essential oil) on a reusable cloth or on a wool dryer ball in the dryer.
