Honey is a more effective cough remedy than many over-the-counter medications

You have probably heard that most conventional cough medicines are being recalled because they are very dangerous and don’t really. The FDA recently admitted that ver-the-counter cough and cold medications in children under the age of 6 can lead to many dangerous side effects.

Fortunately, there are many effective natural remedies that work. Raw honey alone may be an effective cough suppressant.

A new study by a Penn State College of Medicine proved that honey is an effective and safe alternative than over the counter cough medicines.

The study found that a small dose of buckwheat honey given before bedtime provided better relief of nighttime cough and sleep difficulty in children than no treatment or dextromethorphan (DM), a cough suppressant found in many over-the-counter cold medications.

Why Honey is a More Effective Cough Remedy

Honey Can Reduce Cough Irritation

Honey is full of enzymes that can reduce irritation caused from the cough. Since honey is sticky and moist, it’s able to form a kind of barrier to soothe and protect the throat.

Honey  Strengthens the Immune System

Honey possesses antibacterial, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties which fight against viruses and bacteria. Regular consumption of honey strengthens the body’s immune system and decreases the severity of cold.

How to Take Honey

Take 1-2 teaspoons two to four times daily  for a week and if you don’t feel any better, or your symptoms worsen, speak to your doctor.
