Have you ever stopped to check the ingredients and the nutrition facts on your bottle of ketchup before squeezing a dollop onto your food? Recently I was doing some research on the ingredients and what I found shocked me.
We all know that nutrition labels usually list the ingredient that is used the most first. In this case, the ‘tomato concentrate’ is used the most. And for some, it sounds pretty healthy.
However, tomato concentrate is a fancy term for ‘tomatoes that have been heavily processed and contain no nutritional value.
Here’s the heinz “ketchup” ingredient label:
tomato concentrate from red ripe tomatoes, distilled vinegar, high-fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, salt, spice, onion powder, natural flavoring.
1. High Fructose Corn Syrup: Heinz Ketchup is FULL OF high fructose corn syrup. It is made from corn that has been genetically modified. It has also been linked to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and more. It can cause spikes in blood sugar levels and can also damage the liver.
Additionally, high fructose corn syrup contains mercury not regulated or measured by the FDA. In 2009, two studies performed in the United States found that,
“Mercury is toxic in all its forms. Given how much high-fructose corn syrup is consumed by children, it could be a significant additional source of mercury never before considered. We are calling for immediate changes by industry and the [US Food and Drug Administration] to help stop this avoidable mercury contamination of the food supply,” the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy’s Dr. David Wallinga, a co-author of both studies, had warned.
2. Sugar
Heinz Tomato Ketchup is loaded with sugar. It contains 23.6 grams sugar per 100 grams. According to the American Heart Association, the maximum amount of added sugars you should eat in a day is (for men) 37.5 grams or 9 teaspoons and (for women) 25 grams or 6 teaspoons per day.
3. Distilled Vinegar:
Distilled vinegar, the second highest ingredient on the list, is also made from GMO corn. A lawsuit filed in 2014 stated that Heinz Distilled Vinegar was not all natural but was made from genetically modified corn, which is grown with toxic pesticides and chemicals.
No Nutritional Value Whatsoever: Heinz ketchup does not contain nutrients, fiber, or protein. There may be traces of tomato paste in ketchup, but that does not make it even somewhat healthy. It’s full of GMO’s, sugar, and even possibly mercury, a heavy metal that is extremely toxic to the body.
You should detox toxins from your body
Fortunately, it is quite easy and inexpensive to cleanse your body of toxins by adding certain supplemental foods to your diet such as spirulina.
Spirulina is an edible blue-green algae. It is known for its distinctive green color and strong odor. It delivers a strong dose of protein, all eight of the essential amino acids, iron, folic acid, B vitamins, selenium, and manganese, resulting in strong therapeutic benefits. Spirulina can be effective in removing toxins from the nervous system and the liver.
