Did you know a new study showed bee venom can kill triple negative cancer cells in 60 minutes? Australian researchers found that the venom from honeybees can destroy aggressive breast cancer cells in a lab setting.
The venom – and a compound in it called melittin – were used against two cancer types which are difficult to heal: triple-negative and HER2-enriched. The study was published in Nature Precision Oncology, a peer-reviewed journal.
“The venom was extremely potent,” says Dr. Ciara Duffy, who led the research. “We found that melittin can completely destroy cancer cell membranes within 60 minutes.” Crucially, the poison left healthy cells unharmed.
Bee Venom Healing Properties
Bee venom is the poison that creates the painful sensation of a bee’s sting . It’s is a mixture of proteins, peptides and low molecular components that’s been used in various medicines.
Specifically, bee venom contains melittin, a peptide found in the European honey bee’s venom that has attracted scientists’ attention since the 1950s. It has exhibited a host of benefits, including immune system regulation and anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antiviral properties.
Additionally, in 1988 scientists at the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki in Greece found that bee stings significantly slowed the progression of an arthritis-like disease in rats. They have also discovered that venom slows the production of interleukin-1, a compound that makes arthritic pain and inflammation. worse. Several recent studies in South Korea have found that melittin blocks inflammation.
