The FDA has approved an Indiana company’s genetically altered salmon. It might be available at restaurants next year, but you may not know you are eating it.
This genetically modified salmon, known as AquAdvantage Salmon, is grown in indoor tanks in Indiana. This salmon can grow at a much faster rate and requires 25 percent less feed. According to the company, this type of salmon will be able to protect native fish populations and marine ecosystems as it’s produced indoors. The salmon has been legal for sale in Canada.
So this type of fish will be able to reach full size in about 18 months. That’s twice as quickly as wild salmon. To achieve that, this fish is given an added growth hormone from the Pacific Chinook salmon that will make the fish to produce growth hormone all year long.
This is outrageous, as a recent research commissioned by the European Union found that genetically modified fish “have a considerably greater effect on the natural environment than hatchery-reared non-transgenic species when they escape.”
GM foods may cause many health issues
Although there are no long term studies on the dangers of GM salmon to out health, what we do already know about other GM foods is disturbing. Rats that were fed GM tomatoes approved by the FDA suffered from bleeding stomachs.
Restaurants don’t have to disclose GM salmon
Unfortunately, restaurants are exempt from the mandatory disclosure. SO if you want to avoid genetically modified foods, it is going to be very difficult to know the truth. In other words, restaurants don’t have to tell customers what they are eating. And this is unacceptable!
