Half of all men and one-third of all women will experience cancer at some point in their lives. Fortunately, there are ways to significantly reduce your risk, as detailed in Dr. Leigh Erin Connealy’s book, “The Cancer Revolution: A Groundbreaking Program to Reverse and Prevent Cancer.” Connealy’s interest in cancer prevention and treatment grew out of her own, long personal health journey.

“[When] my mother was pregnant with me … she started bleeding. The doctor gave her a drug called DES (diethylstilbestrol). That was given to women in the ’50s to prevent miscarriage. Approximately 16 years later, my parents received a letter … [saying] ‘This drug causes cancer, hormone problems and anatomical problems. You need to go to University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and get a full workup.’

At 16 years of age, I started getting pap smears, colposcopies and biopsies … [T]hey told me … I would need to be followed continuously for this problem. I went to University of Texas School of Public Health and did my Masters on DES … [learning] all about the complications …

I had many of them. Today, I still have many of them. My whole mission is [to avoid] cancer, because I was so high risk. Luckily, in my journey … I met practitioners who’d had cancer themselves and fought it and won. I always tell people, ‘You learn from those who have already been down that path and have become masters of healing themselves.'”

Key Anticancer Strategies: Diet and Detoxification

Optimizing your body’s ability to burn fat as its primary fuel by eating a ketogenic diet and/or fasting is a foundational aspect of cancer prevention and treatment. Detoxification is another crucial component. Connealy’s book contains a chapter focused on detoxification, as most of us are inundated with thousands of toxins each day, many of which have carcinogenic potential.

“Water, air and soil [are contaminated],” she says. “If you’re going to live in today’s world … the No. 1 thing you need to do is detox on a regular basis, somehow, some way. A lot of it you can do at home all by yourself …

We do heavy metal testing and toxic load testing for all patients … [Phthalates are] the next big thing. Phthalates are everywhere … [and] we know they cause cancer, heart disease and diabetes … Then [there are] the heavy metals — mercury, cadmium, lead, oxides, aluminum and arsenic.

Then [there’s] the benzene compounds … indoor air pollution, outdoor air pollution … toxic teeth. People don’t realize their teeth are connected to the rest of their body. There are toxins being produced by different infections and/or root canals …

Then you have [water pollution] … Even if you’re not taking a prescription by your doctor, you’re getting it in the water. Whether it’s blood pressure pills, chemo, birth control pills … it’s in the water supply. You’re getting it regardless of getting water purification.”

Simple Detox Strategies

When it comes to water filtration, remember that filtering your shower water may be more important than filtering your drinking water, as you actually absorb three times more chemicals through your skin than when taken orally. There are many ways to eliminate toxins. One of the simplest and perhaps safest ways is to use a low EMF, far-infrared sauna coupled with a near-infrared light, as your skin is a major organ of elimination.

Connealy has had a sauna in her office for nearly 18 years. “I tell people the single greatest investment they can make … is investing in an infrared sauna,” she says. Not only is it useful for detoxification, but cancer cells also do not fare well in extreme heat.

Adding ozone to your sauna is another potent anti-cancer strategy. Hooking the ozone generator up to an oxygen generator is ideal. Place the ozone generator in the sauna with a small fan to blow away the excess. Connealy also recommends using organic coffee enemas and taking regular baths with Epsom salt, baking soda and clay.

“The medicinal effects of Epsom salt are phenomenal,” she says. “It relaxes the nervous system. Magnesium’s involved in 400 chemical reactions in your body. It relaxes the entire muscular system. Then baking soda … It helps oxygenate. It’s antimicrobial. It alkalinizes the body. These are simple little things that we can do in the comfort of our home.”

She also uses zeolite as a daily detox, along with 10 ounces of fresh green juice each morning and vitamin C, the latter of which has potent antimicrobial, anti-chemical, anticancer, alkalinizing effects. “People sometimes say they can’t afford some of these things,” Connealy says. “Yes, you can afford it. You’ve got to put your priorities in place. Health is your most important asset.”

On Cancer Screening

Another section of her book addresses cancer screenings. While detecting cancer early is important, many screening tests have been shown to actually do more harm than good, necessitating taking both pros and cons into consideration.

For women, the most commonly used cancer tests are the Pap smear, mammograms and colonoscopies. While Connealy believes the Pap smear is a good tool, she’s less enthusiastic about mammograms, calling them “an inadequate, incomplete tool of investigation for cancer, especially if you have dense breasts.” In her practice, she recommends ultrasound and thermography instead. She explains her choice, saying:

“The standard of care is for a patient to get mammography. That’s what I’m supposed to tell patients. But I tell people, ‘Look. You’re not going to get all the answers.’ I’ve been doing thermography for a long time. I find most of the breast cancer on thermography, as opposed to mammography.”

For men, common cancer screens include the PSA test, which has been shown to be highly inaccurate and has the potential to cause physical harm.

Blood Tests That Help Reveal Your Cancer Risk
Rather than rely on these conventional cancer tests, Connealy uses standard blood tests to check for things like inflammation and insulin resistance, both of which are precursors and hallmarks of all disease, including cancer. One such test is the high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP) test, which is a non-specific marker for inflammation. “It doesn’t tell me where the cancer is, but it tells me something is brewing,” she says. “We want to see C-reactive protein less than 1.”

The other blood test she uses on all patients is the hemoglobin A1C test, which reflects your blood sugar over the past 90 days. The reason for this test is because high blood sugar is a cancer-friendly environment. “Just those two tests … will tell us that you have an environment for cancer,” Connealy says. Other valuable blood tests Connealy routinely uses include:

• A cancer profile test (fasting blood and urine) from American Metabolic Laboratories, which checks for:

Quantitative human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)
Phosphohexose isomerase (PHI), the enzyme of hypoxia or low oxygen, which allows cancer to thrive
Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA), a stress hormone
Thyroid hormones, as low thyroid levels may predispose you to cancer
Gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), a liver marker and a sensitive screening tool for inflammation
Arachidonyl-2-chloroethylamide (ACEA), a non-specific marker for many cancers
• ONCOblot, which can identify up to 33 tissue types of cancer and has a 95 percent accuracy rate. It measures the ENOX2 protein

• Circulating tumor cell test by the Research Genetic Cancer Center (RGCC). The vast majority of people die not from the tumor itself but from circulating cancer stem cells, which allow the cancer to metastasize and spread throughout the body. This test is used after cancer treatment, to determine whether or not you might need to continue an anti-cancer program. Connealy explains:

“Even if you have surgery, chemo or radiation, it will not eradicate or eliminate circulating tumor cells … The biggest cause of reoccurrence is the circulating tumor cells and stem cells … Anybody who’s had cancer must have their circulating tumor cells [or] stem cells checked quantitatively.

RGCC is not the only lab that does it, but … they’re in 13 countries [and] have the highest laboratory international certification you can have. It is, to me, probably the most accurate …”

Cancer Prevention Is for Everyone

Connealy explains her core strategy when working with patients in her family practice:

“I try to … figure out where all their imbalances are, whether there are nutritional deficiencies, toxic substances, heavy metals, do they have the right antioxidants, are their mitochondria working or not working? Then I do all the hormone testing. I also look for cancer, because we all have to embrace this prevention …

Today we have this incredible laboratory testing … I do the nutritional testing, and it’s not just nutritional checking. It checks their gut. It checks their antioxidants. It checks everything. You know what you’re dealing with more specifically. Believe it or not, the insurance companies pay for all these tests. It’s not like it’s financially unaffordable because all the insurance companies pretty much pay for all of these, whether it’s blood testing and/or nutritional testing.”

She also employs nutritional supplements known to improve mitochondrial function and/or aid in the elimination of cancer stem cells. There are approximately 50 different agents with a known effect on circulating tumor cells and stem cells, including vitamin C, vitamin D, curcumin and agaricus, a type of mushroom.

In regard to vitamin C — which recently made headlines when researchers found intravenous (IV) vitamin C doubles the effectiveness of chemotherapy and radiation treatment — the vitamin works by producing hydrogen peroxide. This oxidative stress is what kills the cancer cells, while healthy cells have several pathways by which they can eliminate the hydrogen peroxide.

Combining IV vitamin C with nutritional ketosis and fasting for 14 to 48 hours before and during chemo has been shown to produce even more remarkable results, as detailed in a recent interview with Dr. Abdul Slocum.

In certain cases, Connealy will add vitamin K3 to her vitamin C protocol. K3 is a synthetic form of vitamin K2, designed for tumors that have high catalase. In addition to these natural agents, most of which are rotated, not given all at once, she uses supportive oligonucleotide technique (SOT) therapy.

SOT therapy involves taking circulating tumor cells and reverse engineering a messenger RNA (mRNA) to disrupt the DNA of the circulating tumor cells. That mRNA is then given back intravenously, and has a 24-hour, seven-days-a-week targeted killing effect that lasts for about four and a half months. While it cannot be used for masses (tumors), it attacks the circulating tumor cells, which are responsible for 95 percent of metastasis and death.

Treatment Alternatives: Cryotherapy, IPT Chemo and Hyperthermic Therapy
While surgery, chemotherapy and radiation are a standard part of conventional cancer care, Connealy does things a bit differently. For example, she recently started working with an interventional radiologist who does cryotherapy, which is where you freeze the cells.

“I had a patient with a very large grapefruit-sized tumor on her right chest wall, a neuroendocrine tumor. She had breast cancer on her left breast and a neuroendocrine tumor [on her right]. She’d already been treated by other doctors [who] said they could not do anything. She came to see me. The neuroendocrine tumor is now gone from the cryo procedure. The left [tumor] is partially gone …

If it’s something small that we can approach, I will recommend cryo because surgery is a very intrusive procedure … In some patients, you do everything [to] get rid of the tumor burden because the tumor burden is immunosuppressant. Patients may need chemo. If I have patients who have cancer in multiple locations in the body, I will recommend IPT chemo. That’s insulin potentiation therapy with chemo.

IPT chemo is using a low-dose chemo after I do the sensitivity testing with RGCC. It will tell me the ideal agents for these particular patients. We will make a cocktail. We give insulin. It lowers the blood sugar to a therapeutic moment. We give the chemo drugs … and then we drop a bag of sugar.

I also got a machine from France called iTherm. I’ve been using the iTherm machine on some cancers. When you get your RGCC testing, it tells me whether your cells respond to heat shock protein. It will tell me the three different proteins and the sensitivity.

Specific cancers, like breast cancer, [are] very easy to treat with the hyperthermia machine. We trained with the doctor in France who only allows integrative treatments if you have stage 3 or 4 cancer. He spent a lot of time with us in conference calls, elaborating us on this particular treatment protocol.

I will combine that with mistletoe, an immune-modulating natural substance. We combine all those things together. Because the first thing we have to do if we have lots of tumor burden is to … shrink it down to a manageable problem. Then if it’s easily accessible with a cryo or a surgical procedure, we will do that. I’ve had cases where a breast tumor of 9 centimeters with low-dose chemo and hypodermic mistletoe goes down to nothing in one month.”

As noted by Connealy:

“Optimize your eating, your detox, your hormones, inflammatory nutrient levels. Don’t go spend $10,000 or $20,000 on a procedure in a dirty body. Get your body prepared. I prepare my patients two weeks before they even have a surgical procedure. Don’t go have surgery when you don’t have good nutrient levels, when you don’t have a good immune system, when you have inflammation. Get the body ready. The outcome would be outrageously improved.”

99 cent stores have a lot of benefits. They sell the basics that everyone needs. Cleaners, kitchen supplies, tableware, makeup, electric cords, and a lot more. Deals Over Quality

Researchers recently made a test of 164 products from four of the largest U.S. dollar store chains. The test was to find out if the products had any questionable chemicals. 99 Cent Store Products to Avoid
Obviously, there are some products sold in 99 cent stores that you should just plain stay away from. Yes, they are much cheaper than the name brands, but the quality is not the same and they should not be trusted at all.

Batteries– most 99 cent store batteries are carbon zinc, which drains power very quickly. Alkaline batteries are much better. Remember to recondition your batteries when they die, instead of simply throwing them away.

Toothpaste- some toothpaste are made in foreign countries. They can contain a higher amount of Fluoride than is standard by the American Dental Association.

Vitamins– in 2004, a Consumer’s Report study found that more than half of the dollar store multivitamins were missing at least one nutrient that was on the label. Several of the vitamins also did not dissolve properly.

The even more disturbing news is that most of the products contained an average of 4 out of the 8 metals tested, and each product contained an average of 2 of the 4 toxic metals, such as arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury. These metals cause severe health side-effects.
The FDA report from a couple of years ago listed 400 different lipsticks that contained trace amounts of lead. Even though it was stated that these amounts were low, and they did not pose a safety concern, Dr. Mark Mitchell, co-chairman of the Environmental Health Task Force for the National Medical Association, claims that
“Lead builds in the body over time and lead-containing lipstick applied several times a day, every day can add up to significant exposure levels.”

Another study conducted in Canada showed that 51% of the analyzed products contained cadmium, which is a known carcinogenic material. It has been found in breast cancer biopsies.

The major concern is that these metals do not cause severe side-effects right away, but the issues develop over time, and raise the risk of reproductive disorders, cancer, and numerous health issues.

The gallbladder plays a central role in maintaining a healthy digestive profile. This tiny organ is located just below the liver and is essential in releasing bile into the digestive tract in order to metabolize food.

It is estimated that 20% of the world’s population will develop gallstones in the gall bladder at some stage in their lives. This figure does not take account of the numerous stones that accumulate in the liver and its ducts, given that the liver produces them in the first place, and then travel down to the gall bladder. I have personally witnessed the removal of gallstones from hundreds of patients – some of them had gall-bladder symptoms but had no positive results from an ultra sound scan. Most, however, did not have any symptoms at all, yet would flush out literally hundreds of stones – no exaggeration! One woman in her 50’s had three scans and the radiologists found nothing. She had pains in the gall-bladder region for 20 years. When she did the gall bladder flush she removed 430 stones the first time around, and about 300 the second time!

 

Going for a gallbladder detox is a surefire way of eliminating the unwanted toxins and formation in the organ. It is a painless and harmless natural way of removing stones, without requiring invasive procedures such as surgery, laser, etc.

GALL BLADDER CLEANSE

Ingredients:
1/2 Cup Olive Oil Extra Virgin

3 lemons or 2 small pink grapefruits

Apple juice contains malic acid that dissolve the cohesion between gallbladder stones.

The following is taken from “The Cure for All Advanced Cancers”, p. 562ff:

Take no medications, vitamins or pills that you can do without on the day of the cleanse. They could prevent success.

Eat a NO-FAT breakfast and lunch such as cooked cereal with fruit, fruit juice, brown bread with a little honey (no butter, milk or margarine), baked potato or other vegetables with salt only.

2.00 PM Do NOT drink or eat after 2 o’ clock.

6.00 PM Drink one serving (3/4 cup) of ice cold Epsom salts. Mixing one-tablespoon Epsom salts into 3/4 cup cold water can make this. You may add 1/8 teaspoon of vitamin C powder to improve the taste. You may drink a little water afterwards, or rinse your mouth out.

8.00 PM Repeat the Epsom salt drink as above.

9.45 PM Pour 1/2 cup olive oil and squeeze 1/2 cup orange or grapefruit juice into this, with one juice of a whole fresh lemon. Shake or stir hard until the oil and fruit juice mix thoroughly.

Visit the bathroom now, as you will lie down as soon as you take the olive oil mixture.

10.00 PM Drink the olive oil and juice you have mixed. Drinking through a plastic straw helps it go down easier. Drink it standing up, not sitting or lying. You may use a little honey between sips to help it down. Try to drink it as quickly as you can, within 5 minutes.

LIE DOWN IMMEDIATELY, ON YOUR RIGHT SIDE! You may fail to get stones out if you don’t. The sooner you lie down, the more stones you will get out. Try to keep perfectly still for 20 minutes. You may feel a train of stones traveling along the bile ducts like marbles. There is no pain because the bile duct valves are open, thanks to the Epsom salts. GO TO SLEEP.

NEXT MORNING – upon awakening take another dose of Epsom salts. Drink 3/4 cup of the mixture. You may go back to bed. Don’t drink this before 6.00 a.m.

2 HOURS LATER – take you 4th and last dose of Epsom salts. Drink 3/4 cup. You may again go back to bed.

AFTER 2 MORE HOURS – You may eat. Start with fruit juice. Half an hour later eat fruit. One hour later you may eat regular food but keep it light – salads, steamed vegetables, fruit, juices, etc. By supper you should feel well. There are occasions when you may feel a little unwell for a couple of days, particularly when you have not done a liver flush before the gall bladder cleanse. Sometimes this may be due to stones and debris remaining in the colon and causing irritation and inflammation. Colon hydrotherapy or a good, deep enema can help this problem.

In the morning expect diarrhea. Try to catch the gallstones in a sieve in the toilet pan so that you can see them. All these green stones are as soft as putty thanks to the apple juice, and are mostly made of cholesterol.

A few days after the cleanse, stones from the rear of the liver will have traveled “forward” towards the main bile ducts leaving the liver, and fill the gall bladder again! This is why it is sometimes necessary to do up to 6 cleanses (perhaps one each month) in order to get rid of all the stones. Women all around America and other industrialized nations are told that regular mammograms are the best approach for early breast cancer detection (1, 2). A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast that looks to find tumorous growths that are otherwise undetectable in a physical exam. New research has revealed how dangerous mammograms are.

X-rays use ionizing radiation to create the photographic image (3). Despite enormous funding and research, mammography has a very strong opposition in many quadrants of the medical and natural health communities (4).

This opposition is due to the dangers involved with the amount of harmful radiation, the inaccuracy rates and the economic costs. Yearly mammograms had been recommended for women over the age of 50. In 2001, US health officials began recommending women over 40 get regular mammograms. The Lancet wrote in July 1995 that “the benefit (of mammograms) is marginal, the harm caused is substantial, and the costs incurred are enormous…” (5).

Mammograms and False Positive Diagnosis:
Many doctors have trouble trusting mammograms due to their enormous rate of false positive diagnosis. In one large study looking at 60,000 women, the researchers found that 70% of the detected tumors were not tumors at all (6).

These false positive results create a great amount of emotional stress on patients and family members involved. Even worse, these results lead to many unnecessary and invasive biopsies. Research has shown that 70-80% of all positive mammograms do not show the presence of cancer upon further biopsy testing.

The Unnecessary Stress of False Positives:
False positives and unnecessary biopsies can dramatically alter an individual’s health. The emotional stress of believing you have cancer when you do not is enough to trigger the onset or the acceleration of disease in the body.

Many women have undergone unnecessary chemotherapy, radiation and mastectomies after receiving false positive results on a mammogram. This creates an enormous overall economic, emotional, and physical stress on the individual due to the limitations of this sort of testing (7).

Mammograms Bring Massive Radiation:
Routine mammography exposes the individual to an exceptionally high amount of ionizing radiation. Ionizing radiation is something we are all exposed to in nature and the body can handle a certain amount each year without it becoming risky. One series of mammograms (2 xrays on each breast) is equivalent to the radiation dose of 8 normal chest or spinal x-rays (8).

Due to this enormous blast of radiation many experts warn that mammography actually increases the risk of breast cancer. Dr. Russell Blaylock, MD, estimated that annual mammography increases the risk of breast cancer by 2% each year (9).

The National Cancer Institute has stated that mammography is especially dangerous for younger women. In fact, they have stated that it could cause 75 cases of breast cancer for every 15 it identifies. Other studies have shown up to a 52% increase in breast cancer mortality in young women given annual testing.

Mammograms Induce Cancer Growth:
The incidence of certain forms of breast cancer such as ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) has increased by 328% since mammography was introduced (10). Cancer research has also has found a gene called oncogene AC that is very sensitive to radiation (10).

Women who have this gene are at extraordinarily high risk when exposed to mammography. Researchers estimate that 10,000 of these gene carriers will die of breast cancer each year due to mammography.

Mammography also requires the patient’s breasts to be compressed. This compression is known to cause the release of cancerous cells into circulation which greatly increases the risk of malignant spread (11).

Dr. Charles Simone, a former clinical associate in immunology and pharmacology at the NCI has been a strong advocate against mammography. He says, “Mammograms increase the risk for developing breast cancer and raise the risk of spreading or metastasizing an existing growth” (12).

 

Thermography is a Much Better Evaluation:
I strongly believe that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. We should be striving to live an anti-cancer lifestyle every day. Somehow our society has missed this. We are told it is okay to live a destructive lifestyle and then screen ourselves every year until we find the inevitable. When you get diagnosed…we treat you like the victim rather than showing you how you actually caused the problem with years of abuse.

I choose to live the anti-cancer lifestyle everyday and do not waste my time with “testing for disease.” However, for those of you who know you spent years abusing your system and would like a safe test to evaluate for cancer…I recommend Thermography.

Refined sugar was not consumed on a daily basis until the past 100 years. Before that, it was a treat afforded only by the very rich as sugar cane was a difficult crop to grow. In the past 100 years, rates of obesity, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and numerous other chronic diseases have skyrocketed.

When sugar and tobacco were introduced by Native Americans to Europeans as they began to settle America, the average life span was relatively short.1 This meant health consequences from sugar and tobacco were easily buried in the myriad of other life challenges the early settlers faced.

As early as the 1920s, research documented the damage sugar does to your body. To this day, tobacco continues to be a leading a cause of premature death. Unfortunately, while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) call tobacco the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., that title may well belong to sugar. Yet people who would never consider smoking may have little concern over the amount of sugar and starch eaten each day.

From a nutritional standpoint, your body does not need refined sugar. Although you need glucose, your body manufactures the glucose it needs in your liver through a process called gluconeogenesis. If you never ate another morsel of candy, sugar or starch again, you would live quite comfortably and likely in far better health.

Sugar Feeds the Growth of Cancer Cells

Recent research reported in this short news video demonstrates that the amount of sugar you eat each day should be an important consideration in your nutritional plan. In 1926, German biochemist Otto Warburg observed cancer cells fermented glucose to lactic acid, even in the presence of oxygen (known as the Warburg effect), and theorized it might be the fundamental cause of cancer. This led to the idea that tumor growth could be disturbed by cutting off the energy supply, namely sugar.

For decades, scientists and researchers dismissed the idea, and the sugar industry backed them up. Warburg received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1931 for his work in cellular respiration and energy production. His life’s mission was to find a cure for cancer, but his findings were largely ignored by the conventional medical community as they were considered simplistic and didn’t fit the genetic model of disease that was widely accepted.

Recent research from Belgium shows there is indeed a strong link between glucose overstimulation and mutated proteins often found inside human tumor cells, which make the cells grow faster. The study began in 2008, triggered by the researchers’ desire to gain a greater understanding of the Warburg effect.

The rapid breakdown of glucose in tumor cells is not seen in healthy cells, making glucose the primary energy source for cancer. Researcher Johan Thevelein, Ph.D., a molecular biologist from LU Leuven in Belgium, commented on the results of the study in a press release, saying:

“Our research reveals how the hyperactive sugar consumption of cancerous cells leads to a vicious cycle of continued stimulation of cancer development and growth. Thus, it is able to explain the correlation between the strength of the Warburg effect and tumor aggressiveness.

This link between sugar and cancer has sweeping consequences. Our results provide a foundation for future research in this domain, which can now be performed with a much more precise and relevant focus.”

Cell Mutation Not Limited to Sugar Consumption
They’re quick to point out that while they believe the presence of added sugar in your diet may increase the aggressive growth of cancer cells, their research does not prove it triggers the original mutation. That said, previous research has shown that the genetic mutations found in cancer cells are actually a downstream effect caused by mitochondrial dysfunction, not the original cause, and excessive sugar consumption is one of the things that triggers mitochondrial dysfunction. I’ll discuss this more in a section below.

Granted, there are thousands of manufactured chemicals in your home, car and workplace that may cause or contribute to cell mutations. Air pollution, personal care products, plastics and chemical treatments often contain chemicals with carcinogenic properties, and such exposures also play a role.

The mutation of a cell, fed by your daily sugar habit, may grow into cancer. Cell mutation from sugar consumption occurs after mitochondrial damage. However, sugar also provides nutrition to cells mutated by contaminant exposure, and is required for these mutated cells to grow and multiply. As such, your sugar intake becomes an important factor, and one that you have a great deal of control over.

Normally, energy is drawn from glucose through a process of oxidation that requires the presence of oxygen But, cancer cells use a process of fermentation, even when oxygen is present, to create energy. The process, called glycolysis, extracts less energy during the process, but requires less energy and fewer steps to get energy from glucose.

This means that even in the absence of oxygen, tumor cells can extract energy from glucose molecules. Rapid cell division of cancer cells to fuel growth requires the presence of a lot of sugar. Warburg believed a defect in the mitochondria of cancer cells allows the cells to use glycolysis to fuel growth, which suggests cancer is actually a metabolic disease that is affected by your diet.

Research Supports Cancer Is a Metabolic Disease
In the U.S. an estimated 600,000 people will die from cancer this year, costing over $125 billion in health care expenses. The World Health Organization finds cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide, responsible for nearly 8.8 million deaths in 2015. Imagine if that many people were dying each year from the flu or polio. This would be headline news each day. Have we become so used to the idea of cancer that 1.6 million new cases every year in the U.S. is old news?

Conventional cancer treatment focuses on surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. However, many of these treatments have only been successful at lengthening lives by months and not in curing the disease. The basis for these treatments is that cancer is a genetic problem and not one triggered and fed by mitochondrial dysfunction. As a result, the nutritional link is typically overlooked.

The featured study exposes the flaw in using only pharmaceutical, surgical and radiation treatments on tumors and other cancer growths. Warburg postulated that by cutting off the food supply cancer cells rely on for survival, you effectively starve them.

Research has also shown that genetic mutations are not the trigger for cancer growths but rather a downstream effect resulting from defective energy metabolism in cell mitochondria. This defective energy metabolism changes the way your cells function and promotes the growth of cancer cells.

In other words, if your mitochondria remain healthy, your risk of developing cancer is slim. Thomas Seyfried, Ph.D., author of “Cancer as a Metabolic Disease: On the Origin, Management and Treatment of Cancer,” has received many awards and honors through his long and illustrious career for the work he’s done expanding knowledge of how metabolism affects cancer.

He is one of the pioneers in the application of nutritional ketosis for cancer. While in nutritional ketosis, your body burns fat for fuel instead of starches and carbohydrates. By eating a healthy high-fat, low-carbohydrate and low- to moderate-protein diet, your body begins to burn fat as its primary fuel. Research from Ohio State University demonstrates athletes who eat a ketogenic diet experience significant improvements in their health and performance.

Nutritional ketosis is also showing great promise in the treatment of neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease or Parkinson’s disease, Type 2 diabetes13 and seizures14 that are unresponsive to medications. This recent research from Belgium confirms the work Warburg, Seyfried and others have done, and supports the hypothesis that cancer is a metabolically based disease and not a genetic problem.

Chemotherapy May Not Be the Answer
Traditional administration of chemotherapy may increase your risk of metastasis (the spread of cancer cells through your body) and may trigger additional tumor growth. Chemotherapy is sometimes recommended prior to surgery to help shrink the size of the tumor, increasing the likelihood a woman could have a lumpectomy instead of a full mastectomy.

Recent research reveals that giving chemotherapy prior to breast cancer surgery may promote metastasis of the disease, allowing it to spread to other areas of your body. This greatly increases the risk of dying. The study found that mice had twice the amount of cancer cells in their blood and lungs after treatment with chemotherapy. The researchers also found similar results in 20 human patients whose tumor microenvironments became more favorable to metastasis after chemotherapy.

Other studies in men with prostate cancer have demonstrated chemotherapy may cause DNA damage in healthy cells that boosts tumor growth and helps the cancer cells resist treatment.16 Research continues to reveal the effect chemotherapy has on your body and the devastating effect it has on healthy cells. At least as far back as 2004, researchers have known that “chemotherapy only makes a minor contribution to cancer survival.”

Your Healthiest Choice Is to Avoid Sugar
Sugar is a primary factor driving the development of a number of different health conditions and chronic diseases. Sugar contributes to several of the leading causes of death in the U.S., including:

Heart disease
Hypertension
Atherosclerosis
Cancer
Stroke
Diabetes
Chronic liver disease
Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease

While all forms of sugar are harmful when consumed in excess, processed fructose — the most commonly found sugar in processed foods — appears to be the worst. Manufacturers use the addictive property of sugar to drive sales, and high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) allows them to achieve their goals at a lower price. Although it tastes like sugar, HFCS gives your body a bigger sugar jolt. Dr. Yulia Johnson, family medicine physician with The Iowa Clinic, comments on the use of HFCS:

“Your body processes high fructose corn syrup differently than it does ordinary sugar. The burden falls on your liver, which is not capable of keeping up with how quickly corn syrup breaks down. As a result, blood sugar spikes quicker. It’s stored as fat, so you can become obese and develop other health problems, such as diabetes, much faster.”

It stands to reason that if you want to live a healthier life and reduce your health care costs and your risk for cancer, you’d be wise to avoid refined sugar as much as possible, if not eliminate it from your diet entirely.

Eating real food (ideally organic), following a high-fat, low-carb, moderate-protein diet described in “Fat for Fuel,” and fasting are all things you can do to optimize your health and reduce your risk of chronic disease. Though they may look the same, not all pine trees are equal. Such is the case with the Siberian Fir tree (also known as Abies Sibirica). To the Sumerians, whose civilization was a precursor to the modern world yet remains clouded in mystery, the Siberian Fir was a sacred tree. It was viewed as a symbol of power, grandeur and immortality. This is confirmed by writing on clay tablets from about 7,000 years ago.

The reason ancient cultures valued this pine so highly was due to its medicinal and therapeutic properties. Sumerians would make broths, compresses and primitive Band-Aids with the oils and saps from this tree. The anti-bacterial and fungal properties of the Siberian Fir are amazing. In fact, in forests where this tree grows, the air is basically completely free of microbial pathogens.

Siberian Fir Essential Oil Health Benefits

Essential oils made from the Siberian Fir tree are used to treat conditions and infections in the respiratory tract, vaginal and uterus inflammation, increasing tonality of blood vessel structures and even disorders associated with hemorrhoids and varicose veins. It can also be used for muscular/joint pain and tension due to stress. It can also be used to overcome insomnia and nervousness. Further, a recent study in France indicates that this oil has anti-tumor properties. In the study, Siberian fir oil and alpha-humulene induced a dose- and time-dependent decrease in cellular glutathione (GSH) content and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. This suggests that GSH depletion and ROS production may be implicated in the cytotoxicity of alpha-humulene and fir oil.

How to use Siberian Fir Essential oil:

Generally, this essential oil can be defused and used in aromatherapy, or applied directly to the body (using a carrier oil such as coconut or Jojoba oil). It combines well with other essential oils such as lavender, citrus oils and rosemary.

For respiratory disorders: Defuse 5-10 drops of the oil inhaling deeply (you can boil a pot of water, add the drops and breathe the steam if you don’t have a defuser). Also, rub on your chest a mixture of 5-10 drops with a carrier oil

For Vaginal or uteral disorders: take a bath with warm water and 5-10 drops of Siberian Fir oil. Continue the treatment for up to 10 days.

For Hemorrhoids: Add 5-10 drops of Siberian Fir essential oil to a pad or tampon and apply to the exposed hemorrhoid

For Sore Muscles and Joints: Add 5-10 drops to a cotton pad or cloth that has been dampened with warm water. Apply to the sore muscle or joint for 20 minutes. This works for broken or fractured bones as well. You can also mix 5 drops of Siberian Fir oil with 3 drops of rosemary and 2 drops of Eucalyptus for muscle pain.

As always, test this oil on a small part of your skin before using over your entire body as in rare cases allergic reactions can occur. Also, pregnant women should consult their physician before beginning any therapeutic treatment.

You have to understand that thyroid problems are much more common than most people think, and they often go undetected. It is possible to have a thyroid problem causing wrinkly hands or fingertips. It is more common in hypothyroidism, which means your thyroid gland is not as active as it should be. Many experts are of the view that you are likely to have wrinkly fingertips due to hypothyroidism because it slows down your metabolism and lowers your body temperature as well. With your body temperature going down it is natural for blood vessels at the top of your fingertips to constrict to prevent loss of heat. This constriction pulls the skin down and produces an appearance of wrinkles.

When you have wrinkled fingertips thyroid may be the culprit. In this case you should seek immediate medical attention.

The thyroid does more for the body than many people realize. The thyroid gland is the all-important, yet not well known gland that controls the basal metabolic rate (BMR). The BMR is defined as the base or minimal rate of energy the body is expending, or even simpler it is the speed at which cells make energy/heat. When your thyroid is in proper working order it your body is able to stay at the appropriate temperature which is 98.6 Fahrenheit. However, the body naturally changes temperature throughout the day, but only within a degree. So if you are sensitive to the cold, this could be the reason why.

Being cold is definitely an uncomfortable symptom, but an even more important reason for having your thyroid check is thyroid dysfunction and thyroid disease can lead to heart problems1 (which usually leads to poor circulation causing the cold hands and feet). The thyroid hormone affects the cardiac contractility along with components such as blood pressure, rhythm disturbances, and more. All of these are of great importance, but one that stands out is the cardiac contractility. Cardiac contractility is the measurement of cardiac pump performance. Cardiac contractility has a direct effect on the cardiac output, the amount of blood the heart pumps in one minute. So is the contractility is compromised then the heart is pumping a lower amount of blood than optimal.

Thyroid dysfunction can affect the heart in more ways than just causing poor circulation. Hypothyroidism can also lead to heart disease. The heart disease can be caused by a buildup of mucin. Mucin is a protein substance in the body and can begin to accumulate in an individual with low thyroid function. This substance attaches to water which leads to swelling in the heart muscle, causing weakness and poor heart health. Thyroid dysfunction also raises the risk of heart attacks and strokes. When the body isn’t producing enough of the thyroid hormone it can cause the heart to beat too slowly or irregularly, blood pressure change, and high cholesterol, all of which can lead to a stroke or heart attack.

Your Nails and the Thyroid

According to Hypothyroidmom, “Our fingernails (and toenails actually) say so much about our health. The next time you experience cold feet and it has nothing to do with a situation you are trying to get out of, make sure you pay attention to it! Your body is sending you a clue in the form of discomfort.
