Roger J. Williams (A Biochemist from the University of Texas at Austin) in 1977 published a book called “A Physicians Handbook on Orthomolecular Medicine”. Orthomolecular medicine is the alternative medical practice of treating and preventing disease through nutritional supplementation. Though Roger J. Williams is best known for naming folic acid, he wrote extensively on the concept of “Nutritional Teamwork”.
This means that “No nutrient by itself should be expected to prevent or cure any disease: nutrients as such always work cooperatively in metabolism as a team”. He goes on to say, “because of this ‘teamwork principle’ the administration of many nutrients at the same time is not only entirely logical but basically entirely essential”. This concept can and should also be applied to the way we use nutritional supplementation in our lives as well. When we take that Calcium supplement are we expecting it to work alone or are we providing it a team to thrive in, such as vitamin D which greatly increases absorption?
The concept should also be applied to how we use essential oils. Essential oil blends like doTerra’s AromaTouch and Breathe provide beginners with years of essential oil experience and validation through the research and knowledge of experts who have created these blends. Of course, we can create blends of our own as well. By using more than one essential oil that targets a specific issue, we can increase the odds of achieving therapeutic results by creating a team working on our behalf as apposed to an army of only one. However, we must remember that essential oils are strong and their therapeutic efficacy is different for each individual. If you do try to create your own blends at home use the following guidelines:
1 Make a small batch first and test. Using a dropper start by mixing each essential oil drop by drop up to a maximum of 10 drops (i.e. 3 drops of Frankincense, 3 drops of Myrrh and 4 drops of Germanium). For topical uses mix with 1 teaspoon of a carrier oil such a coconut. From here you have a measured formula to work with, duplicate or multiply.
2 Know your oils: Some oils are suitable for ingestion and others are not. Some oils can be applied topically “neat” (without dilution), while others can cause skin irritation if they are not diluted with a carrier oil such as Jojoba or Coconut.
3 Essential oils are Strong: Essential oils are incredibly concentrated. Did you know that 20 ml of Rose Essential oil is made from over 100 kg of rose pedals? 1 kg of Jasmine essential oil contains the nutritional properties from over 1 million Jasmin flowers. This also helps to explain why quality essentials oils can be so expensive.
Blending is not the only way to ensure nutritional teamwork is working inside your body. Some specialists in essential oils caution against blends (especially blending your own at home) as mixing certain essential oils together can change their frequency and chemical composition, thus potentially altering results. Instead they suggest layering essential oils when applying topically. Since essential oils are rapidly absorbed they can be applied on top of each other and enter the body more like a train then as one substance.
Regardless of your preferred method (blending or layering), make sure to consider the “teamwork” approach to your nutritional and essential oil supplementation! As Roger J. Williams said, “it’s not only logical, but essential”.
